Abstract:
The selection of passages from various authors on various subjects of intellectual import was first recommended in classical times and was still considered vital by Denis Diderot when he undertook his encyclopedic project. This ancient tradition of commonplace books survived into the Renaissance and early modern periods in compilations by Rodolphus Agricola (Roelof Huysman; ca. 1442-85) and Johann Heinrich Alstead (1588-1638). Even so modern a thinker as Francis Bacon urged that a "good digest of commonplaces" be put together every generation for the edification of the literate nonspecialist. In short, there was a link between commonplace books and the multivolume encyclopedias that began to proliferate in the 18th century. But not only were the latter larger and more inclusive, they also had a somewhat different function; namely, to keep up with a knowledge explosion. Ephraim Chambers's 1728 'Cyclopaedia' was the Enlightenment archetype for this undertaking.

Erfreulicherweise ergab meine Suche nach Beständen der Zeitschrift "Journal of the History of Ideas" via OBV-Katalog zwei eindeutige Ergebnisse: Der gesuchte Zeitschriften-Jahrgang (1996) ist sowohl "analog" in der UB Wien verzeichnet, als auch digital über die JSTOR-Seite abrufbar (ebenfalls zugänglich über den VPN-Service der Uni-Wien).
